Ultraviolet systems provide the healthiest water available for pools & spas by dramatically reducing chlorine and other chemicals we have traditionally used. Chlorine used to disinfect swimming pools is widely recognized as a health hazard. New research suggests that children who swim frequently in chlorinated pools may have increased risks of developing allergies or asthma. Among adults, exposure to chlorine in swimming pools has been linked with other health problems including bladder and rectal cancer and, possibly, an increased risk for coronary heart disease.
The latest on this comes from a study in Belgium, which found that teens who spent more than 1,000 hours swimming in chlorinated pools had more than eight times the risk of developing asthma or allergies. The Belgian researchers also found that the risks of hay fever and other allergies more than doubled with significant exposure to chlorinated pools. The study was published in the online issue of Pediatrics on Sept. 14, 2009. In fact, as early as 2004, A. Williams of American College of Sports Medicine recognized chlorine as a health risk. He states, “chlorine concentrations in swimming pools can enhance respiratory problems…We hope people who appreciate swimming as a quality form of exercise will continue to reap its enormous physical benefits, but also be more aware of the potential hazards”
UV pool systems eliminates up to 90% of chlorine and nearly 100% of chlorine side effects. Ultraviolet reduces harsh chemicals to the safest levels available for swimming pools. In fact, chlorine levels can be reduced to those found in drinking water – 0.3 to 0.5 ppm. Furthermore, in almost every case, there will be no need for an algaecide as the UV system will eliminate kill off any resident algae.
Chlorine may indirectly contribute to allergies by irritating and sensitizing the respiratory tract. Studies have suggested that frequent swimming in chlorinated pools and exposure to cleaning products containing chlorine may increase the risk of developing asthma and other respiratory allergies, both in adolescents and in adults.
